Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Monday 9/6/21, Labor Day

Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO

This out of the way National Park was fairly quiet this holiday. Some of the overlooks we had all to ourselves, but it was during the heat of the day, so maybe that explains the lack of crowds.

A good hike thru stunted oaks, and wildflowers in abundance, took us from our campsite to the visitors center. There the Gunnison overlook took us aback , with the railing at the edge looming 2000 ft above the river below! More flowers mixed with cactus and juniper and a few cottontails, got us back to camp and lunch. Then out in the car to add some walking miles hitting every canyon overlook the park had.

We found 4 bar service at the end of the road for Stacey to get in some work the next day, and me a hike to Warner point and the 2700 ft drop view. It’s another Dark Sky sanctuary here, our third of the trip so far. We will say bye to this dark, deep canyon with its black & white metamorphic striped cliffs tomorrow, and hello to Rocky Mtns.
