Still in Georgia and they haven’t escorted this Yankee out yet😜
Yes, we both have chores to do that don’t make it to the blog, thankfully🥺, and this morning was one of those chore days.
But after some work, then comes the play!
We both had heard that Bonaventure Cemetery was a “not to miss”. But neither of us recently re-acquainted ourselves with “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil”, nor is it springtime and the azaleas in bloom. So we drove around a bit and headed out…
We really wanted to get in some biking, but the state park only allowed bikes on 3 miles of trail. I guess, then, a pair of hiking shoes and a set of binoculars it would have to be. Skidaway Park seems like a place that shouldn’t impress me. It sounds like a place teenagers would go to dump piles of trash after a kegger… I was wrong! Skidaway Island State Park is a must on the Visit List of anyone who lives to walk on this EARTH (and not for those who Uber to the gym). We wondered why we couldn’t get a campsite there, and after meeting the lady at the kiosk, we knew we were somewhere special. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t pass on my trip to Disneyland to go here… but I would come here everyday if I lived in Savannah! And seeing the park housing almost made me want to go back to work. Ok, what was so “amazing” you ask? I felt like I was in a different country, Costa Rica or a forgotten tropical Caribbean island, where the trees are massive and the palms plentiful, and where a tiger or sloth would show itself around the next bend. An ancient land surrounded by waters holding ichthyosaurs or plesiosaurs. This feels like an untouched place, even though I know it’s not, from the plaques telling of moonshine and civil war. We had to cross flooded paths to get there, and that made it feel even more remote. Sadly, the wildlife and bird activity was minimal, except for those darn squirrels. But I wouldn’t say it was for lack of trying, we just picked the wrong time of day. Go if you‘re in Savannah, hike the 5 miles of trails, feel like Adam or Eve on an empty planet, and always exit thru the gift shop.

The marshes, horned passalus, cool trails.
