Early morning Sunrise in Canyonlands

Updated: Sep 4, 2021

8/30- Leo is born in AL!

4:30am is for the photographer who likes the dramatic landscapes in the sunrise light, and that’s our traveling professional photographer, Tricia’s, second favorite time of day, behind champagne and photo shoots at sunset…

Mesa Arch in Canyonlands NP is a must, and so we head off on the cold, dark, coffee and headlight-required, hike. There are several early risers, carrying pounds of cameras to find a staging spot for the show of light on the Mesa Arch rock face. We had a lousy showing by the Sun King that morning, so the famous glow didn’t reveal itself.

Onto other audacious views, and we find ourselves at the end of the road above the meeting point of the Green & Colorado rivers at Grand View. Stunning rim hike a mile out, to the waiting, hungry chipmunks (which we later learned are actually golden mantled squirrels), guarding the edges of the known world.

Back into town, and the consensus was the Moab Brewery for eats and AC. Then, a short, hot rest stop at the campground, before back out and into Arches NP for the Utah license plate worthy Delicate Arch at sunset.
