Grand Mesa, CO
One way to avoid the heat is to climb in elevation. And Grand Mesa delivers that in full! Our campsite overlooking Ward Lake was a thin-air site, above 10,600 ft!! It’s a completely different world on top of this volcanic lakes and woods
environment. They even have moose up here and re-introduced wolves recently, which eluded us of course. We did have a Bald Eagle land in a tree nearby, who made some fishing rounds while calling out the next morning. They are the Mike Tyson of birds : big and fierce, but with a rubber ducky squeak of a voice.
It was our last night together with Mark & Trish, us going onward and they elsewhere. Sad to lose such good traveling companions, but lucky we had them for so long! A nice bottle of bubbly to toast with, and a long saved chocolate port wine by our first allowed campfire; it was just the sendoff one would want.
