Lefkada peak hike

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

The Lefkada vs Lefkas debate goes on and on on the webs… some say Lefkas is from the Ancient Greek vs Lefkada - modern Greek, others say Lefkada is the island and Lefkas is the capital of that island. Just in case you were confused on my interchangeably of the two names last post.

The hike started with flowers and ended with snow

This last look at the island before we left called for a big hike up to the top.

At a 1000 meters above the Ionian Sea, the true top was covered in ice & snow. We chose a lesser peak, since I didn’t pack the crampons… Our trailhead started in the cute mountain town of Karya. Hiking up and out of the town itself, started us off breathing hard (not enough cardio to be had while on the boat I guess🥺). The trail led up though terraced olive orchards, and then an ancient abandoned village. Rocky, narrow and barely used trail led up from the abandoned village and into the patches of snow on the north faces. The temperature dropped significantly and the winds picked up as we neared the topmost section of our 7 miles hike, but we mustered the resolve to see the view.

Sadly we picked the wrong viewpoint, ours was an old military radar site, where the other peak held the blue & white monastery and a place to get out of the winds (and pray a little that we make the slippery downhill). Without incident we survived the snow fields, only to be nearly run over by a crazy mtn biker zooming down the trail.

Driving back through the hillside towns, we searched out the only “brewery” on the island and sampled one it’s two beers. I will say that Greece does some a good red and dark beers👍. Back to Lefkas to start the last 6hr15min load of laundry (it both washes and dries in the same one machine - in about the same time it takes to sew all the clothing together in the factory!?).

Next stop: Corfu - where we are the only tourists on the entire island!
