Tybee Island, GA

Sunday Nov 7, 2021

Sunday, we made the drive into Georgia, stopping for a little 3 mile walk along the way. I wasn’t expecting much for a roadside stop off the two-lane Highway 17. Edisto Nature Trail was a roadside attraction on my Roadtrippers app, that coincided with a pee stop. I was pleasantly surprised, even in the diminishing rains, with the boardwalks built for a large portion of the trail. No wildlife, other than some fleeting birds, but the fauna was different than any we’ve seen…well worth a short walk and a look!

Driving straight through Savannah to Tybee Island without stopping, mainly due to being tired of the city after a few days in Charleston. We arrived at our campground and setup camp, between the dog park and the police station. Checking out the area by car for potential sites and stops, we picked Fort Pulaski National Monument for our late afternoon stroll. Again expecting “not much” in the way of stimulus at a historic site, I was wrong … The drive in gave us a great Bald Eagle look & a minute later, a plump and armored armadillo nosing about by the road. Ok, you got my attention Fort Pulaski!

The fort was nicely put back together by the park service after the Union blew it apart during The Civil War. A friendly volunteer answered all our silly questions, and we read every sign they had (which isn’t really our norm...) and yes there are sometimes alligators in the moat, as well as sharks!

Back to camp for our quick, and thankfully last, backpacking meal, we even had time for a sunset swing & stroll out along the beach, where we found some not so familiar signage(!?!) and the Tybee Island lighthouse.
